This Cookie Policy explains how The Understory App, part of The Understory brand, uses cookies and similar technologies when you use our App. We aim to be transparent about our limited use of these technologies.
Cookies are small text files stored on your device by your browser. They are widely used to make websites work efficiently and to provide information to site owners. Similar technologies include localStorage and sessionStorage, which store data directly in your browser without sending it to a server.
We use your browser’s localStorage to temporarily store the property address and location data you enter, so it persists as you move between steps in the App. This data stays entirely on your device — it is never transmitted to our servers. You can clear it at any time via your browser’s site data settings.
This localStorage use is strictly necessary for the App’s multi-step workflow to function. No consent is required for strictly necessary storage.
The App loads resources from third-party services that may set their own cookies or use similar tracking technologies.
Google Maps, Google Places, and Google Solar APIs may set cookies for purposes including fraud prevention, security, and performance monitoring. These are governed by Google’s Privacy Policy.
If you make a payment, Stripe may set cookies for fraud prevention and session state during checkout. These are governed by Stripe’s Privacy Policy.
Other services used by the App (Open-Meteo, iNaturalist, OpenStreetMap, NREL, USDA) are called via direct API requests and do not typically set cookies in your browser.
You can control cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to view and delete existing cookies, block third-party cookies, or clear all site data.
To clear the localStorage data stored by this App specifically: open your browser’s developer tools → Application tab → Local Storage → select the App’s domain → delete entries.
Note that blocking certain cookies may affect the functionality of the App, particularly the multi-step address workflow.
We may update this Cookie Policy as our use of technologies changes. We will post the updated policy with a new effective date. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance.
